Methi Paneer Recipe (Fenugreek and Cottage Cheese Curry)

Methi Paneer Recipe Methi Paneer is a delicious North Indian curry made with fresh fenugreek leaves (methi) and paneer (Indian cottage cheese) in a rich, creamy gravy. This dish has a slightly bitter taste from the methi, which is balanced by the creaminess of the gravy.

Ingredients

For the Paneer and Methi Base:

  • 200g paneer (cubed)
  • 1 cup fresh methi leaves (fenugreek), washed and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tomatoes (pureed)
  • 1 green chili (finely chopped)
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • ½ cup fresh cream or malai
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Methi Leaves
    • Wash the methi leaves thoroughly and chop them finely.
    • Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a pan, sauté the methi leaves for 2-3 minutes to remove bitterness, then set aside.
  2. Prepare the Gravy
    • Heat 1 tablespoon oil or ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add finely chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
    • Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for another minute until fragrant.
    • Add the tomato puree and cook until oil starts to separate from the mixture.
  3. Spice It Up
    • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook for a few minutes until the spices are well blended.
  4. Add Methi & Paneer
    • Add the sautéed methi leaves and mix well.
    • Add the paneer cubes and gently stir so they are well coated with the gravy.
  5. Make it Creamy
    • Lower the heat and add fresh cream. Mix well and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
    • Sprinkle garam masala and mix.
  6. Final Touch
    • Turn off the heat and let the curry rest for a few minutes before serving.
    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves or extra cream.
